Flourishing through Science
Science at St George’s is a journey into the wonder of creation. Children are encouraged to explore, investigate and reflect on the world around them. Our curriculum is rooted in the Christian vision that all may “have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10), and it invites pupils to see science as a way of understanding both themselves and the universe.
Through practical enquiry and thoughtful discussion, children develop a sense of awe and responsibility. They learn to ask questions, test ideas and appreciate the complexity of life. Spiritual prompts and calling questions help pupils reflect on their role as stewards of creation and consider how scientific understanding can shape their choices and values.
A language of curiosity and understanding
Science empowers all pupils to interpret the world around them and ask meaningful questions about how and why things happen. We value science as a discipline that brings clarity, confidence, and agency, particularly for pupils who may be disadvantaged or underrepresented. Our curriculum supports equity of access through well-sequenced vocabulary, hands-on investigations, and inclusive adaptations for SEND and EAL learners. We see science as a doorway to cultural capital, allowing children to imagine futures in medicine, conservation, engineering, and beyond. Scientific knowledge becomes not only a tool for discovery but a way to act wisely and compassionately in a changing world.
Learning that builds wisdom
We follow the Kapow Primary curriculum, carefully mapped to the National Curriculum and the recommendations of the Ofsted Research Review for Science. Our approach combines substantive knowledge across biology, chemistry, and physics with the disciplinary knowledge of scientific enquiry. Pupils learn to observe, hypothesise, test, and evaluate through a coherent enquiry cycle. Concepts are revisited in greater depth over time, supported by knowledge organisers, practical tasks, and integrated assessment. The curriculum is designed spirally to ensure that learning connects across units, builds logically, and remains memorable. Teachers bring science to life through clear modelling, vocabulary-rich dialogue, and deliberate opportunities to apply knowledge in context.
A community that thinks deeply and wonders widely
In our classrooms, children are curious, resilient, and reflective. They use scientific language confidently, evaluate evidence with discernment, and see mistakes as part of meaningful discovery. Each year, pupils encounter examples of scientists past and present, exploring how science can improve lives and shape society. They consider ethical questions, ask “What if?”, and imagine the world as it could be. Scientific enquiry becomes a spiritual pursuit as pupils wonder about the scale, design, and complexity of creation. Through science, our children grow in confidence, wisdom, and hope, ready to flourish in secondary school and beyond as responsible, questioning citizens of a global world.
